The silence of the lush dense forest was broken by someone's booming, cheerful singing. The forest dwellers, dropping what they were doing, turned in amazement toward this remarkably large source of noise and loud laughter. The merry fellow wore an old but still gleaming helmet; his stout build was concealed under blue-and-white striped trousers (which would undoubtedly fit two gnomes) cinched with a belt bearing a fine buckle. Why, of course — in this decidedly not-small forest dweller everyone instantly recognises Obelix.
Who is he? Anyone would tell you that Obelix is a good-natured, jovial fellow of extraordinary strength and no less extraordinary appetite. He carries enormous branches and stones with ease, so no forest tidying or moving house is complete without Obelix. He himself explains his strength by having accidentally fallen into a cauldron of magic potion as a child and acquired truly heroic power forever.
Naturally, as a great lover of good food, Obelix is most often found either in the forest tavern or with some food in his hands. Right now the gnome is busy devouring an enormous haunch roasted over a fire. Perhaps that is why Obelix is always in such a state of contented good cheer...
But perhaps more often than with food, Obelix can be found in the company of his little pet dog Dogmatix, who seems quite tiny beside the stout gnome. Obelix is very attached to his favourite and considers him one of his best friends. Yet Obelix's good nature extends not only to Dogmatix but to all forest inhabitants. He does not squander his strength in vain but puts it to use helping his forest friends. Every one of them is certain they can count on Obelix. He will be only too glad to come to the rescue — and will inevitably infect those around him with his love of life and merry laughter, planting happiness in the hearts of all forest dwellers.
