The sunset faded, dusk fell gradually and the night darkness thickened. The forest was becoming quite different. A world lit only by the quiet moon — mysterious, enchanting. And sometimes it seems as though a few stars have descended into the crown of an old oak. But those tiny glowing spheres are not stars at all. This is the little forest creature — the Wood Spirit Midnight Light, hiding in the dense foliage.
But who are Wood Spirits? They are mysterious forest creatures who have inhabited ancient trees since time immemorial. Their little bodies are covered in soft fur. Their faces are hidden behind wooden masks, so only their enormous curious eyes are visible. But whatever a given Wood Spirit may be like, they are all united by a kind nature and a great fondness for concealment — for few can claim to have conversed with them. As a rule, they prefer silent, unnoticed observation.
And what of our Midnight Light? When dusk settles over the forest, he comes out of his dwelling and settles onto one of the broad branches of the old oak. Hidden by emerald foliage, he sits high up and watches how the last ray of the setting sun gilds the treetops — and then, one by one, stars begin to light up in the sky above. And the Wood Spirit, heart alight, peers with his flickering enormous eyes at the distant luminaries. He loves to pick out his favourite constellations in the dark blue mirror of the sky, and then read about them in his large old book. He gladly catches the fresh night wind that ruffles his soft black fur. It is at such moments that it seems as though many small dancing stars have descended into the crown of the majestic oak.
But the little Wood Spirit does not only admire the star-filled sky. He has one extremely important task. As a rule, oak branches are covered with ordinary acorns, but very rarely among them there ripen glowing blue-violet ones. These are what our fluffy creature seeks. He hangs them on his antlers and staff, using them as lanterns. And many forest dwellers passing by watch with wonder as glowing acorns sway gently on the antlers of the Wood Spirit up in the tall oak's crown. And from this soft light the forest creatures are instantly calmed. That is how the Wood Spirit drives away the dark fears that so often creep into the heart at night. Perhaps that is why he was named Midnight Light.
